Biotechnology in simplest way is the technology that is based on biology. Biotechnology uses highly cellular and bio molecular processes so as  to develop those technologies and products that can be helpful in improving our lives and the health of our planet "EARTH". Humans have used the different biological processes of various microorganisms from past thousands of years(approx.6000) so to produce  useful food products, like bread and cheese, and also to preserve different dairy products.

How is biotechnology contributing to the world?

HEAL THE WORLD

Biotechnology is helping in healing the world by using nature's self-created mechanisms and also by using our own genetic makeup to heal and guide lines of research by:

  • Decreasing level of infectious disease;
  • Saving lives of millions of children's;
  • Changing the conditions of serious, life-threatening diseases affecting millions of people around the globe;
  • Providing treatments to individuals to minimize health risks and side effects;
  • Creating more appropriate tools for disease detection; and
  • Fighting serious illnesses and everyday threats confronting the developing world.
FUEL THE WORLD

Biotechnology harnesses various  biological processes like  fermentation and uses bio catalysts such as enzymes, yeast, and other various  microbes to become successful microscopic manufacturing plants. Biotechnology helps  to fuel the world:

  • By Contributing to the steps in chemical and biochemical synthesis processes, by over 80% or more;
  • By minimizing the temperature for washing and cleaning clothes and potentially saving $4.1 billion annually;
  • Improving  efficiency of manufacturing process to save 50% or more on operating costs;
  • Minimizing usage of and reliance on petrochemicals;
  • Using bio-fuels to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 52% or more;
  • Decreasing waste generation and water usage ; and
  • Tapping into the full potential of traditional biomass waste products.
FEED THE WORLD

Biotechnology modifies  insect crop defense system , improves crop herbicide tolerance and provides the use of more eco-friendly sustainable farming practices. Biotechnology is helping to feed the world by:

  • Generating crops with higher yields with fewer inputs;
  • Minimizing volumes of agro-chemicals which are required by crops-limiting the run-off of these products into the environment;
  • Using biotechnology crops that need lesser usages of pesticides and that allow farmers to reduce tilling farmland;
  • Developing those crops with advanced nutritional profiles  thereby solving vitamin and nutrient related deficiencies;
  • Producing allergens free foods and toxins such as mycotoxin; and also
  • Improving food and crop oil content to help improve cardiovascular health.

Modern biotechnology provides modified products and  inventions to counter rare diseases, reduce the environmental footprint, feed the hungry people, minimizes use of cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes.
